The 50-page manuscript by Héron de Villefosse recounts the saga of the statue known as Nike of Samothrace, from its accidental discovery in 1863 to its installation at the Louvre in 1884. The story includes, in chronological order, the transportation of its fragments to France; the incomplete restoration and exhibition of the statue at the Louvre in 1866; the Austrian expeditions on the island and the discovery of the huge prow on which the statue originally stood; the final restoration by French and German specialists; and its installation on the specially reinforced main staircase landing leading to the Louvre antiquities gallery. The author mentions the smaller size copies made for European museums, largely outnumbered by those ordered by the United States (the latest being shipped to Chicago as the author was writing his article).

The French archaeologist Antoine Marie Albert Héron de Villefosse (1845-1919) was president of the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres.
